ATV Helmets – Properly Sizing For The Best Protection
To stay safe while riding an ATV, wearing a properly fitted helmet is one of the best actions you can take to protect yourself. Here are some tips to make sure that you choose a properly fitted helmet.
The ATV helmet should not be tight or too loose. The helmet should be snug. If you have to struggle to put the helmet on, its too tight. If the helmet slides onto your head easily, it is too loose. If the helmet moves around too much on your head, it may not protect you in an accident. Choose a helmet that has some resistance as you pull it onto your head. Move your head in every direction when trying on an ATV helmet. The helmet should comfortably cradle your head snugly without being tight and should not move as you move your head.
Next, secure the chin strap and try to pull the helmet off. If the closure system is secure, the helmet should not move at all with pressure applied, after it is secured. Check the closure, or just try on another helmet. Sometimes it is easier to just keep trying helmets on to find one that fits perfectly rather than try to make one fit.
Children pose a dilemma when sizing an ATV helmet. If a helmet is loose, parents may think that is OK as the child will grow into the size. To size a children’s helmet, you would follow the same sizing tips for an adult. Your child’s head may not be protected adequately in the event of an accident if the helmet is too loose. Having to update the size of your child’s helmet is a small price to pay for their safety.
